There has never been a better time during history to be a home based business owner than now. The covid19 pandemic has forced more people to socially distance through staying at home and working at home as much as possible. For those of you who have never worked from home before this situation, how does it feel? Are you considering working from home full time even when society starts to mingle again? If so, you’re not alone. Many people have come to learn that sometimes in life, your Plan B suddenly becomes your Plan A, and you need to quickly get on board with adjusting to the new life plan that you are living. Here are four tips that everyone who has a home based business should follow:
Your Credit Card Should Be Your Friend
Contrary to what you might have been led to believe, credit cards are not dangerous. Rather, credit cards should be viewed as useful tools that can help you to build a saving nest egg, especially when you have credit cards that help you to earn rewards such as cash back, merchandise, and travel rewards. When you use credit cards responsibly and pay off the bill in full each month so that you don’t have to pay interest on your purchases, you will earn savings through your credit cards. This is especially true when you have a rewards based credit card that does not charge an annual fee for the card. You will still be able to earn rewards even if you do not pay your bill in full each month, but the aim should be to avoid paying interest whenever possible. Put all of your business and personal purchases on your credit card whenever possible, and use the rewards you earn to treat yourself to something really good.
Use a Date Book
Even though your cellular telephone can be used as a calendar, you are better off getting a date book to record your meetings and goals. Writing down your goals and meetings and seeing them listed in black and white will give you a stronger sense of achievement than if you type the details into your phone. Create a schedule for what you want to achieve. It can be so easy to procrastinate when you work from home, and it can be very easy to put off doing a task that you know you need to do. You need to encourage yourself to be motivated and to be the best boss that you’ve ever had. As your own boss, you are responsible for your success, and you are also responsible for setting an example for yourself. Work with a sense of enjoyment, but also, work with a sense of urgency to achieve your goals as much as you can even when you do not feel like working at times. Give yourself permission to rest and take breaks when needed, but be consistent in completing the projects that will help your business to succeed.
Have Two of Everything
I am firm believer that it is best to have more than one system in place for your needs. For instance, it is best to have two different email addresses in case your main email address is compromised. It is also best to have 2 more credit cards, 2 bank accounts, and 2 computers (1 laptop and 1 desktop). Having a back-up business operating system will come in handy when something happens. And believe me, something WILL happen at some point where you will be either be thanking your lucky stars that you created a backup system early on in your business, or you will strongly regret that you did not have a backup system already set up.
Seek Out a Mentor
One of the things that is so great about being a home based business owner is that most entrepreneurs are in business for themselves but they are never by themselves. There is usually someone else who is doing what you are doing for work, or, they are doing something similar to your work. It can be great fun to exchange ideas with someone who understands what you are going through. I personally love discussing business ideas with other professionals whose businesses are similar to my own. I learn so much when I talk strategy with people who are focused on achieving greatness in their own personal and professional lives. The best way to learn and the best way to lead is by example. If you do not know of anyone who you can approach to discuss business ideas, then find a mentor online whose internet social media accounts you can follow. Many leadership experts share valuable insights on their social media accounts through blogs and through vlogs. Best of all, most social media content is free and can be shared with others.
